Short Menu extension not working

Hey,

Since Bitly is gradually introducing preview pages with ads for all shortened URLs, I was looking for a replacement.

My first step was to check what is supported by PopClip. I found that Short Menu is cool - they promise they won’t do what Bitly did and you can even have a custom domain in the free plan.

So, I registered an account and installed the Short Menu app (5.4) and the PopClip extension, but unfortunately, it seems it does not work. It just displays an X character.

PopClip 2024.12 (4688) with Short Menu ext (v 100) on macOS 14.7.4. Any ideas ?

BR.

It looks like at some point in Short Menu’s development, they removed the “shorten with Short Menu” Services menu command. This is what PopClip’s extension used, and its removal is why it now fails with the “X”.

I’ve poked around to see if there is an alternative mechanism, but no luck so far. They have short-menu: URL scheme, but I can’t find any documentation.

For now, I’ve unlisted the extension since it no longer works. Thanks for reporting it.

A bit more poking reveals they seem to have an API:

https://docs.shortmenu.com/api-reference/introduction

So in theory I should be able to add a PopClip extension that access this directly (withoud needing the app installed). Would you be interested in that? Give me a sign of interest and I’ll see if I can put that together.

This would be cool! I think many more people will soon start looking for alternatives since the recent Bitly changes, so I would definitely be interested!

Here is the new Short Menu extension featuring direct shortening via the API: Short Menu — PopClip Extensions

It seems to be working well for me, but please ley me know how it goes for you.

Cool to also have a way to explicitly define the custom domain!
