So the headline pretty much sums it up. Recently installed the app, and the default actions seem to work. However, when I download an extension from the extension directory (eg. Word-Count-p94cm7-100.popclipextz) it does not load into PopClip by double-clicking it, right-clicking and selecting Open With>PopClip.app, or dragging the extension onto the app. Anyone have any suggestions as to why/what to do?
I’ve heard of this happening for a couple of users. The resolution that worked so far has been to reinstall PopClip with a fresh download. Give that a go and please let us know if that worked for you.
Hi Nick,
Thanks for the reply. I’ve uninstalled and tried re-installing with no luck. If anything, it possibly made things worse. Prior to that, when I did a Get Info and selected the option to ‘Scale to fit below built in camera’ it worked once I rebooted. Now it doesn’t acknowledge that preference and I can only view the app by clicking on the application to launch it, and it’s still not loading the extensions.
I am installing this app via our MDM, would that have something to do with it?
I don;t think an MDM woud make a difference, but are you using an app such as Bartender to hide or move the PopClip menu bar icon? This can have the side effect of completely hiding the PopClip menu UI. If so, please try disabling the hiding option for PopClip.
Hi Nick,
I don’t currently have Bartender installed. I can’t really think of any app that would be having that interaction. I have Raycast installed, but that’s more of a Spotlight replacement and doesn’t interact with the Finder bar as far as I know.
Can you describe exactly what happens when you double-click the downloaded extension? Is there any error message or indication of anything happening at all?
I see you mentioned the “Scale to fit below built-in camera” option, but I’m not familiar with it. What does it refer to? (Scratch that, I looked it up!. I don’t think it is relevant in this case as PopClip doersn’t have a full menu bar.)
Edit: Can you temporarily quit other apps that have menu bar icons to see if that makes the PopClip icon visible? You can also command-drag the PopClip icon further to the right to keep it in view. I’m currently working on a PopClip update that will resolve this issue, which seems to be increasing in frequency, by not attaching the preferences window to the icon position at all.
One other thing I just remembered: where do you have PopClip located on your disk? Ensure is it in the /Applications
folder as weird behaviour can happen if it is anywhere else.
Hi Nick,
So you’ve partially solved some of the issues in that I apparently had a bunch of finder bar icons I wasn’t even aware of that were hidden by the camera of the MacBook Pro. I’ve eliminated some of those and now see the icon in the menu bar.
As to the question about what happens when I double click an extension, initially, nothing happens for a couple of seconds, and then it ‘ripples’ (for lack of a better word) like it’s launching, and then… nothing happens. I did a little recording, but it won’t let me upload the .mov as an attachment.
I’d like to see the video. Could you upload it to me here?: https://www.dropbox.com/request/QZit2LMzPZsQc09tjBsi
Done!
If you “Get Info” on the popclipextz file, what’s the associated app under Open With?
PopClip.app (default)
Can I get you to try this:
- Rename file from
.popclipextz
extension to.zip
- Unzip the file with finder, to reveal
.popclipext
package (noz
) inside - double-click the
.popclipext
package. Any difference?
Hi Nick,
I’m afraid there’s still no change.
Thanks for trying.
Next please will you run this in Terminal; what’s the output?
mdfind "kMDItemCFBundleIdentifier == 'com.pilotmoon.popclip*'"
/Applications/PopClip.app
And what if you drag and drop the .popclipextz file onto /Applications/PopClip.app
icon in Finder?
It’s not added, and there’s not even any sort of visual reaction.
Well, I’m completely out of ideas now. Err, rebooted recently…?
Ha. Yup. Thanks. And thanks for trying and being so responsive. I am also out of ideas. I feel like it’s something to do Gatekeeper or something like that, but I have absolutely 0 to base it on. I also wouldn’t be surprised if it was the MDM somehow.
