A suggestion for any Quotes extension update: add the * as another character option. Some website comments sections use this to indicate italics.
Alternatively, I could probably figure out how to make a snippet that would do the same thing. But my PopClip popup (is this what you mean by “rack”?) is already kind of unwieldy…although a snippet with a number of options could replace the standard Quotes ext…
