I’m pleased to announce the release of PopClip 2025.9, which brings support for macOS 26 Tahoe and a user interface overhaul.
What’s New
Compatibility
Full support for macOS 26 Tahoe.
The minimum system requirement is now macOS 11 Big Sur.
New: A General Overhaul
This update brings a major redesign of the user interface for accessing, configuring and updating PopClip.
A completely new settings window, no longer attached to the menu bar.
The menu bar icon now opens as a standard macOS menu instead of a custom
popover, which eliminates issues with menu bar manager apps such as Bartender.
All functions in the menu bar are duplicated in the settings window (including
Quit), so you can now hide the menu bar icon permanently and not lose any
functionality. Open the Settings window at any time by relaunching PopClip
(from Finder, Spotlight, etc.).
The “On/Off” setting is renamed as “Appear automatically” to more accurately
indicate its effect. Many users did not know that PopClip can still be made to
appear when “Off” via the keyboard shortcut or AppleScript trigger, so I hope
this will help clarify the overall app logic.
A subtle update to the appearance of the PopClip bar, using the “vibrancy”
effect in the background, both to modernise the look and to improve
legibility.
A much improved software update flow, with a proper “Check for updates”
command (finally!), unobtrusive notifications in the settings window (no
sudden pop-ups), and a new, opt-in, “Install automatically” option.
Other refinements for a more comfortable experience.
New: Features
Option to exclude specific website domains or addresses, in supported browsers.
Option to exclude all apps by default and only include chosen apps.
Fixed
Better support for browsers: Dia, Quark, Vivaldi Snapshot, Zen.
Compatible with latest version of Anki.
Version Information
Please note: version 2025.9 has been superseded by 2025.9.2, which contains only bug fixes and compatibility improvements.
Oh … I learned about all this only now, when the MacUpdater app suddenly notified me of the new version (I hadn’t launched/used PopClip in a long time, actually had forgotten about it, sorry and now, remembering how practical it can be, I’ve set it again to launch on system start).
Hello, this is Tom in Germany,
I’m new here but neither new to the ’net, nor to Discourse, nor to PopClip.
… and I’m not sure whether I possibly blundered with the latest update … because I didn’t upgrade per your migration instructions which I only found AFTER the upgrade
Anyway, MacUpdater told me this is a total new version:
Possible Major Version Upgrade This update seems to be a major new app version
If this is a commercial app, the update may require a new license.
Please continue only if you are sure that this is a free app or that your existing license ensures you can use the new version.
So I clicked “Cancel” and launched my installed version of PopClip … which then offered me an update, which I gladly accepted, and now my installed version is this
I believe the reason MacUpdater thinks is it a major upgrade is because of PopClip’s year.month version numbering. It thinks the increase from 2024 → 2025 represents a major version bump.
No, you don’t have to do anything. The migration instructions are basically “delete the MAS version, install the standalone version” but with extra steps for all the things people manage to get wrong while doing that .
Be aware that your MAS license agreement no longer applies; I am providing free access for you to the Standalone edition at my discretion. I wanted to make it as easy as possible for everyone to stay onboard the good ship PopClip during this transition period. But you don’t have a lifetime license and some future version of PopClip might require MAS users who purchased more than a certain number of years ago to buy a license key.
No, there isn’t. Simply trust in the magic of iCloud which will persist your purchase record across clean installs and also to your next Mac. (I don’t know of any other app that does this; I don’t know why, I guess other devs enjoy to deal with “lost my license” emails a lot .)
If you’d like a license key, you can buy a lifetime license now to lock in the current price and my current offer of 50% off for MAS customers. Let me know and I’ll message you a promo code.
Also, can you tell me what macOS version you are using? I notice PopClip isn’t showing the proper SF Symbols in that screenshot!
Exactly right. Got this epic task done, which was long needed, and now I work on that and a lot of other good stuff that we have all wanted for a long time.
This morning, after I upgraded to Tahoe, I could click the Popclip menu bar icon and I could click on On/Off button and all the tabs. But, I could not check the box “Check for updates” nor clicked on Quit. So, I was not able to upgrade to new version. After I downloaded Popclip from the website, I could upgrade because Popclip is still running. Looking at “Force Quit” menu and it’s not showing there.
The only way to do quit Popclip is to look at the process in Activity Monitor and end the process. Then, my upgrade was successful. Just putting this here for everyone, in case you have the same issue.
I just released version 2025.9.1, available now via in app update and via Setapp. It’s not worthy of a full topic because it’s mostly just mopping up minor bugs discovered in the big 2025.9 release. You can see full details of the changes at PopClip Beta discussion (after 2025.9).
Is there any way to make the bar somewhat more transparent again? I’m still on Sequoia, and the darker color of the bar in light mode has been pretty distracting.
